Turning Green & Spalted Wood

Dive into green turning and the wonders of spalted wood. Learn to cultivate, turn, and stabilize it.

This three-day workshop will focus on turning bowls from unseasoned log blanks using the once-turned method, with a focus on working with spalted wood. Instructor Charles Cieri will discuss how to process log blanks to encourage the unique coloration created by fungi, known as spalting.

While the majority of the turning process is the same as turning dried wood, new topics introduced will include strategies for mounting irregularly shaped blanks on the lathe, the possibilities for stabilizing wood, and strategies for drying green-turned bowls to minimize checking. Ample time on the lathe will allow students to develop and refine their turning techniques.

Each day will run from 10 am to 5 pm, with a lunch break. Please keep in mind that this is a long day, and turning requires a lot of standing, so we recommend wearing your most comfortable (close-toed) shoes. We will have anti-fatigue mats and stools available if needed.

We provide all the materials and tools you'll need so you can focus on turning! If you already have some turning tools, feel free to bring a few to get advice on sharpening or using them.
